Eve Hesse Studio Work at ICA, Boston

It’s well worth a visit to this small show, which closes Oct. 10, 2011, featuring studio samples of Hesse’s mature work. Context is everything, for when one sees these experiments in photographs of her studio, one has to question their meaning and status within the white walled confines of the gallery versus the artist’s trial and error attitude while working…

Visit the Institute of Contemporary Art for more info.

Boston Ahts Festival Stitchers

Thanks to all of the people who visited my Stitched Drawing demo on Christopher Columbus Park in Boson on 9/11-12!

Stitchers of all ages took time out of their busy day, sat down and sewed parts of ‘community samplers.’ See all of the activities on my flickr web page.

Sewing Cafe in Paris…why not in your town?

I read this terrific article in the Providence Journal about two women, Martena Duss and Sissi Holleis, who opened up Sweat Shop, a sewing cafe where one can rent a sewing machine by the hour, nosh on sweets, and drink as much espresso as one’s needle will allow. Like the US, home economics classes “have long been absent from the French public school curriculum.” Therefore, their how-to-sew classes are the most popular.

Sounds like we could use a sewing cafe in every city and town! Think about starting one…

Here’s the article link.

Acadia inspiration…

Recently back from a far too brief stay in Bar Harbor, Maine, I am reminded of how necessary such respites are, no matter how much one loves one’s work! Hiking for three hours on easy to moderate trails in the sublime Acadia National Park, my legs ached from working forgotten muscles.

But my eyes retain its wild contrasts of sky, ocean, peace, and crowds. I can’t wait to see how these images will translate into new work.

Think about a weekend getaway before summer slips away…
